Alexandra de Steiguer
Represented by Pucker Gallery since 2014
BORN: 1966 in New York, New York
RESIDES: New Hampshire and the Isles of Shoals
Alexandra de Steiguer first began photographing while crewing aboard research and educational ships, starting with a stint on an old barkentine out of Gloucester, Massachusetts. For nearly thirty years, de Steiguer has been photographing the Isles of Shoals in the winter. As the winter caretaker, she is the island’s sole resident for five months. Her images pay tribute to the wild elements that claim the Isles’ shores, reflecting connections within the natural world and the transitory, humbling nature of our residence in it. De Steiguer's work has been exhibited in galleries throughout New England and are included in the permanent collection of the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Ogunquit Museum of American Art. She is also a two-time artist fellow of the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts. All of her work is personally hand-printed on gelatin silver paper, and has been signed, dated, and numbered by de Steiguer. Her photographs are featured in the exhibition American Impressionist: Childe Hassam and the Isles of Shoals, co-organized by the Peabody Essex Museum and the North Carolina Museum of Art, in cooperation with the Shoals Marine Laboratory.
