Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres (2017), MacArthur Fellow (2012), Maître Archetier d’Art (1983), and Best Artisan of France (1979), Benoît Rolland is a musician and master bow maker. Trained in the French School of bow making by Bernard Ouchard in Mirecourt, he has made bows since 1971. His bows have been continuously played by world-renowned artists, from Sir Menuhin to Anne-Sophie Mutter, and Rostropovich to Yo-Yo Ma. Benoît advanced the French tradition, pioneered carbon fiber bows in the early 80s, and proposed a new design for the orchestral conducting baton in 2017. His studio, initially in Paris, is now in Boston, Massachusetts.
