When Maria Muller began photographing in black and white, she also learned how to work in the darkroom. Later she started hand-painting her silver gelatin black and white photos with oil paint. She uses the vibrant hues of applied paint to transform reality. The scope of her artwork encompasses a wide range of subject matter. She is self-taught.
Muller's painted photographs have been shown in numerous group and solo exhibitions. Her photos are included in publications, private collections in Australia, China, Spain, and the U.S., as well as in corporate collections.
Maria's work also includes one-of-a-kind artist's books and assemblages. Two of her artist's books, featuring her photos, are in the permanent collection in the Houghton Library at Harvard University.
Muller's art is also part of the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Cleveland Art Museum, the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the New York Public Library, and the United States Embassy in Belgium, among others. She was the recipient of a Massachusetts Artist's Foundation fellowship.
